I think your openning comments are correct Piers. There are widely divergent opinions - from 'experts'. We don't really know where this is going. It is new territory. A key milestone will be the General Election. Post that, some serious decisions need to be made about public spending (which seems to be propping up a lot of the economy) whoever is in power. The impact of that and withdrawing quantitive easing will need economic recovery generally to counter it, but will it be there. The RSL and other sectors with strong public purse links, will have to deal with reduced grant and financial support from partners. I think we're in for a long haul with opportunities for new ways of working and collaborating!

The request for two front teeth for Christmas would seem resonable, it is the arm and a leg that the Banks want that smarts!

We received the following comment by email from "A Treasurer":

"Funny isn't it.

The banks get themselves into the mess. Earn massive bonuses for taking unrealistic risks. Then when it hits the fan, the country bails them out. Then we should be grateful for them lending to those very people who saved them (and the 'risk free' HA's (before the banks started hitting us with margin calls)) at massive margins so they can start paying themselves massive bonuses again. Funny old world.

Our clearer has hit us large in the last week. I have a long memory.

Happy Christmas by the way!"

Adrian Joliffe sent us this comment by email:

"Banks have fouled up but it seem that their position is being protected at the expense of their borrowers who will not receive the same protection, so no wonder borrowers feel a bit miffed.

Banks employ highly paid top flight economists and mathematicians, so how did they fail to forecast this downturn and keep some capital for a rainy day? Was it because they were out spending their bonus that day?
In comparison to the banks the RSL's are looking a paragon of virtue with broadly strong balance sheets and cashflows.

Some banks are not acting rationally. If as reported a failing RSL in supervision was not rescued because the proposed new parent was to suffer a repricing then ultimately the self help ethos of the RSL movement will be in the end blown away by the banks (who probably need it most!).

Can THFC accept deposits and turn itself into a bank for the RSL industry?"
